Microsoft’s Project Artemis: A Free Tool to Fight Online Child Abuse Is Out Now!

Microsoft, the leading American multinational technology company, has launched a free online tool to scan online chat rooms and detect sexual predators. The tool will target predators that target children online. Named Project Artemis, this new tool will be accessible to online service companies offering chat services, especially via video games.

The tool has been programmed to scan text-based conversations and analyze them on the probability that a user might be attempting to abuse children sexually. It gives a rating to the chat that will help the chat services providers to flag conversations to be checked by human moderators. These moderators will then decide if they should report those users to law authorities or not.

Project Artemis started in November 2018 at a Microsoft “360 Cross-Industry Hackathon.” The tool has been developed with a joint effort of Microsoft, Kik, The Meet Group, Thorn, and Roblox. The licensing of the tool will be taken care of by Thorn, which is a nonprofit organization that is known for building technologies to guard children against sexual exploitation.

Announcing the Project Artemis in a blog, Microsoft wrote:

“Project Artemis” is a significant step forward, but it is by no means a panacea. Child sexual exploitation and abuse online and the detection of online child grooming are weighty problems. But we are not deterred by the complexity and intricacy of such issues. On the contrary, we are making the tool available at this point in time to invite further contributions and engagement from other technology companies and organizations with the goal of continuous improvement and refinement.

Microsoft is not the only giant technology company that is fighting to defend online child abuse and exploitation; last year; YouTube also removed many channels and disabled posting comments of millions of videos after reports revealed that a child porn gang is active on the platform. The biggest social media platform Facebook has also said that it takes advantage of machine learning to detect sexual predators and stop child exploitation. Even the famous Tumblr application was also pulled from the App Store for a while.
